The following videos are of the University of Saskatchewan’s AREC 251’s student debate assignments on standard agricultural practices. All topics are written from the perspective of the prosecution, and defense’s role is to defend the current practices of standard agricultural practices.

The current permissible practices of ‘dehorning’ in livestock under Canadian animal welfare standards should be illegal.
The ‘inhumane’ practice of livestock branding should not be permissible.
The current practice of poultry cages in Canada does not meet the international standards and Canada’s poultry production should end the use of cages.
Neonicotinoids have been linked to the declining health and number of bee colonies, prosecution recommends banning the use of neonicotinoids in all agricultural, gardening and landscape uses.

Currently under Canadian animal welfare practices, dairy cattle are not required to have unconfined access to space on a daily basis year round. Dairy standards should be changed to allow access to unconfined spaces.
While Roundup is not a desiccant, it is often used as one. Fines should be enforced for post-harvest glyphosate residue detection.
Good stewardship programs and the use of tax concessions should be federally mandated, rather than being volunteer programs.

Canola on canola production is an agronomic practice which should not be allowed.

The current labelling of plant protein based foods as ‘meat’ should not be allowed to be called meat.
Producers should not have the right to do whatever they want on their land in regards to tile drainage if it impacts their neighbours, and should be held accountable.
Currently rBST in dairy production is banned, this ban should be lifted.
Organics standards in Canada do not allow for the inclusion of GMOs. The prosecution is arguing that GMO crops should be allowed to be included in organic production under Canadian standards.

The prosecution argues that under regular growing conditions, tillage should be subject to carbon taxes.
The overuse of chemicals in agriculture has been a growing agronomic and environmental run-off concern. Prosecution argues that regular field surface water testing should be mandated and maximum residue limits should be enforced through fines.
The lack of adequate weed control can have costly impacts to neighbouring lands, to reduce such cases, higher taxes should be imposed on those individuals found to be lacking adequate measure to control their weeds.
